Multi-slide Stamping and Assembly of a Spring Steel Seed Wiper for the Agricultural Industry
A customer in the agricultural industry approached Slidematic Products Co. in need of an assembled seed wiper and pick. The individual stamped components were made of annealed 1050 spring steel and both parts needed to be heat treated and zinc plated. The seed pick needed to have a purchased carbide bumper inserted into it, and then to be assembled with semi-tubular rivets onto the seed wiper. Our team worked closely with the customer, following their specifications, and determined this project would require two Multi-slide stamping tools and could be assembled on one of our automated modular cells.
The stampings were developed using one of our #28 Multi-Slides. The parts were then sent to one of our superior heat treaters and afterwards to one of our top-notch zinc platers. We purchased the carbide bumper and inserted it into the pick once it came back from plating, using one of our press modules. The carbide inserted pick was then assembled to the plated seed wiper with two semi-tubular rivets, using two of our semi-tubular riveters. The overall finished product measured 2.000" long, .500" wide, and the material used was .022" thick. All dimensions were held to specified tolerances, which were often in the +/- .005" range.
Upon full inspection and testing, the product exceeded our customer's expectations. With a quick turn around from the inception to the final product, we were up and running an average output exceeding 4,000 units/day and shipped over 200,000 units in the months following. Our customer was highly satisfied with our quality, service, and reliability.
