Multi-slide Stamping of a Steel Collar for the Electrical Industry
A customer in the electrical industry commissioned Slidematic Products Co. to produce a steel collar, which allowed us to utilize our multi-slide stamping capabilities. The part required tapping that included a torque requirement. Zinc plating was also called for. The customer supplied us with all the specifications and a 2D CAD drawing.
We expertly designed and built a multi-slide tool, which included processes of punching, tapping, extruding, and crimping in one operation. We produced this product using our multi-slide stamping equipment, with a tapping attachment that allowed us to perform the roll tapping in line. The product was made of 12 gauge steel and had a 5/16-24 tapped extrusion. The finished circuit breaker terminal collar was .640" long, .450" wide, and .920" high, and was zinc plated.
Many of the tolerances called for were within +/- .005", and all were held within spec. Also, the final torque readings well exceeded the minimum requirement.
Upon completion, a PPAP/FAI was produced along with a capability study to ensure quality. In the months following approval, we produced over 1 million units for our offshore customer.
